Grok Bot users can now move their routines, skills and memory into Hermes Agent
People who use Grok Bot, the AI agent service made by xAI, can now carry their setup into Hermes Agent: their scheduled routines, their skills, what the Bot remembers about them, their connected apps and the role the Bot plays. The import is described in the official Hermes Agent documentation maintained by Nous Research, and it shipped on the 2nd of November in a Hermes Agent update, according to the release notes Nous Research published on GitHub.
What started it
Grok Bot is a helper that runs tasks for you on a schedule, inside its own cloud account at xAI. On the evening of the 1st of November, an X user asked Elon Musk to reset Grok Bot usage limits early and wrote that "lots of people say their usage ran out really fast this week". That post has been seen nearly 1.8 million times.
Musk answered 23 minutes later. "The cost of serving Grok Bot was unsustainably high relative to revenue," he wrote. His reply had passed 10 million views by the 3rd of November.
The next day Nous Research quoted Musk's reply on X, adding only the Hermes command that starts a move from Grok Bot. By the morning of the 3rd of November that quote post had been seen more than 355,000 times.
What moves across, in plain words
The official Hermes Agent documentation describes the import step by step, on its page about importing from other agents. Five kinds of things come over:
- Routines on a schedule. A "routine" is a job the Bot does by itself at set times, for example a morning summary. Each one becomes a scheduled job in Hermes Agent, with the same timing, the same time zone and the same skills.
- Skills. A skill is a saved recipe that teaches the agent one task. They are copied into their own folder in Hermes.
- Memory. Facts the Bot has learned about you go into the agent's memory files.
- The Bot's role. The short description of who the Bot is and how it behaves becomes the personality file of a fresh Hermes agent. On an agent that already has its own personality, it is saved as memory notes.
- Connected apps. Apps the Bot reaches through a web address arrive in Hermes Agent as tool connections, the links an agent uses to work with other services.
Routines that start from an event, such as a new email or a message in Slack, are saved as written notes for the user to rebuild by hand, according to the same page.
Why the routines arrive switched off
Every routine lands in Hermes Agent paused. The documentation gives the reason: while the Grok Bot copy is still switched on, the same job would otherwise run twice. The user turns the routine off in Grok Bot first, then switches it on in Hermes, one at a time. An option at import can also create the routines already switched on, and the Grok Bot copies go off first in that case too.

How the export works
Grok Bot keeps its Bots, routines and skills in its own cloud account and has no export button, the Hermes documentation says. So the Bot exports itself. When a user runs the import with no export file yet, Hermes prints a short message to paste into the Bot's chat. The Bot then writes a file describing its own setup, without changing anything on its side.
The user downloads that file and runs the import again. A file saved in the computer's Downloads folder is found automatically. Users with more than one Bot repeat the steps for each one.
Before anything is written, Hermes shows the full list of what it is about to import, and the user confirms it.
What stays behind
Passwords and API keys (the private codes that let a program use a paid service) do not come over. An export that contains anything that looks like a password is refused, and text shaped like a secret key is blanked out, according to the documentation. The user connects an AI model to Hermes Agent separately, during its normal setup.
What the routines need to keep running
A routine in Hermes Agent runs on the machine where Hermes Agent lives. On Grok Bot, that machine sat in xAI's cloud. After the move, it is the user's own.

That has a practical side. A laptop that is closed at 7 in the morning runs no 7 o'clock summary. The jobs that come over from Grok Bot keep their schedule only if Hermes Agent sits on a computer that stays on all day and all night, such as a small private server.
Also in the update
The same Hermes Agent update of the 2nd of November brought a second import, for people moving from OpenBot, a desktop agent app, according to the release notes.
